El origen del CAB se remonta a la propuesta presentada a la NASA por un grupo de científicos españoles y norteamericanos para unirse al entonces (1998) recién creado NASA Astrobiology Institute (NAI).
El CAB fue creado como centro mixto entre el CSIC y el INTA, y con el apoyo de la Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid (CAM). Su objetivo inicial fue establecer un entorno investigador verdaderamente transdisciplinar para el desarrollo de la nueva ciencia de la Astrobiología, con nueva y específica contribución de una metodología común basada en las teorías de complejidad y en la aplicación del método científico a la Vida. https://cab.inta-csic.es
NASA funded its first exobiology project in 1959 and established an Exobiology Program in 1960. NASA’s Viking missions to Mars, launched in 1976, included three biology experiments designed to look for possible signs of life.

The mission of the SETI Institute is to explore, understand and explain the origin, nature and prevalence of life in the universe.
The Institute comprises three centers, the Center for SETI Research, the Carl Sagan Center for the Study of Life in the Universe and the Center for Education and Public Outreach. SETI Institute began operations on February 1, 1985. http://www.seti.org/
